Tasks

Activities of the Laboratory Division (Adobe acrobat show in Hungarian)

Instrumental mineralogical analyses: Determination of minerals as well as determination of the quantitative and qualitative mineralogical composition of rocks using computer-guided X-ray diffractometer, derivatograph-PC thermoanalitical equipment and Fourier transformation infrared spectrometer as well as efficient querying and analysing softwares. Detailed analysis of clay minerals applying different treatment techniques.

Chemical analyses: Determination of the element composition of rock and water samples using ion chromatographic and atom spectroscopic (AAS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS) methods. The chemical laboratory is accredited by NAT (National Accrediting Board) according to the EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard under the number NAT-1-1302/2008. The technical field of accreditation: analysis of the total element content in rock and soil samples soluble in nitrohydrochloric acid as well as of their organic contaminants, determination of the physical parameters, main components and organic and inorganic micro-components of surface and subsurface water samples.

Organic geochemical analyses: Measurement of C-, S-, N- and H-content of rocks following carbonate release; determination of organic contaminants (TPH, BTEX) in rock and water samples using gas chromatographic procedure following extraction.

Magnetic susceptibility measurements: Magnetostratigraphic analysis of sedimentary rocks by magnetometer. Preparation of polarity profile, age dating of geological layers as well as determination of settling velocity. Definition of palaeotemperatures upon magnetic susceptibility data of sediments.

Sedimentological analyses: Analysis of fraction size by laser particle sizer, analysis of carbonate content, preparation of mineral fractions, determination of rock mechanical and geotechnical parameters.

Scanning electron microscope and electron microscope analyses: Taking electron microscopic images for mineralogical and micropalaentological studies and determination of element composition by EDAX unit.Optical and thermoluminescent analyses: Age dating of young sediments by optical and thermoluminescent methods.
