Tasks

It is an open scientific reference library of national authority, being the greatest among the similar libraries of the same or similar scope. The holdings represent nearly 381 000 items, publications and maps.
The collection of the Hungarian Geological Library is a cultural and science historical rarity that systematically has collected the geological literature and maps from Hungary and abroad since 1869. It provides its proceedings published since 1869 in exchange to similar institutes, scientific research institutes and universities operating all over the world. The exchanged material gives an overview on the geological literature abroad. About 4100 kinds of periodicals, books, conference proceedings, publications not in circulation arrived from 524 active partners. The collection of 381 000 items consists of books, periodicals, maps, manuscripts, translations, microfilms, and CD-ROMs.
The library catalogues are being built continuously. Topic search is possible in the ETO or in the subject catalogue.
In the TINLIB OPAC catalogue books, monographs and conference publications of the last 20 years can be searched. HunTÉKA is the online version, which can be accessed on the MAFI web-page: http://www.mafi.hu
Apart from the collaborators of the Geological Institute of Hungary and the Hungarian Geological Survey, the services of the library are used by employees of other institutes and companies as well as by university, college and high-school students. The number of registered readers in 2005 was 730 of which 301 were students or teachers. The number of documents used in the reading room was next to 30 000 items last year. Besides the traditional library services, there are online catalogues, databases and periodicals, that can also help topic- and information search. One of the most important databases is GEOREF, an American database for geological literature with more than 2.2 million records. It is available for local usage in the Library on CD-ROM updated every month.
According to an agreement between the Institutes library and the American Geological Institute, the library abstracts and sends 300 articles per year from the Hungarian geological literature to the GEOREF Database. The Hungarian version of this abstracted literature is the base of the Hungarian Geological Database, which can also be accessed from the web-page: http://www.mafi.hu
