The short story of the Geréby family The previous name of the family was Gremsperger. The letter patent of nobility was given to the children of Pál Gremsperger and his wife, Mária Pálmaffi called László, Fülöp, Gyula, Pál, Mária and Borbála and their name was changed to be Geréby with the title of nobility Öttömösi on 8th October, 1840. That time the Öttömösi Geréby family moved to Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun county where their deed of gift was announced in 1842. Pál Öttömösi Geréby rented a domain in Kunadacs first that produced such a good income that his son, Gyula managed to buy an own estate in the neighbouring villages. Gyula Öttömösi Geréby established Manor Geréby in Lajosmizse. As a qualified agronomist he developed his 816-acre estate and 22-acre vineyard to be a model farm. He established a stud farm there and due to his excellent results he was elected to bet he vice-president of the animal husbandry committee of Pest County. Manor Geréby, the centre of the estate and the house of the family was built at the end of the nineteenth century. The style of the building is eclectic with the mail dominance of neo-baroque and classicist elements. Gyula Geréby had a leading role in the village, he was the director general of the Village Saving Bank until his death. He was the patron of the poor in the village and he was also respected as a benefactor. Gyula Geréby died at the age of 51 in 1918, his wife died at the age of 65 in 1941. Both were buried in the cemetery of Lajosmizse. Their daughter, Katinka, emigrated to Argentine and died there in 1989. The name of the conference hall where the scientific lectures will be held during the 2nd International Maar Conference called after her. |
