The Director

If for us, geologists, geology is our "bread and butter", then with János Böckh the same simile would be proper. All the founders and creators of the Institute's building did a job of great value. This guaranteed the prosperity of the undertaking. It is Semsey's and Darányi's merit that the flour and the place to bake our bread were provided. Lechner gave - in modern terminology - the "know-how", while Alajos Hauszmann executed the plans. And what was the role of János Böckh? He was the leaven that, from the very first moment to the last, penetrated and raised the independent ingredients and turned them into dough. At the birth of the idea, at the launching of the process everything was the same as during the marking off of the building site or during the Building Committee's meetings: he ordered roses into the garden, made phone calls, saw about the museum's installing and furnishings, and showed the King round.
One of the lucky moments of the history of domestic geology was when the right men in the right place made the right steps, and the environment could ensure them all favourable conditions, as well. The Institute of Geology has been one of the gems of our capital already for a hundred years.
