The Geological Institute of Hungary operating within the Hungarian Geological Survey is a state budget research organisation with partially independent economy. The Institute has full right to dispose of the budget estimates. This status does not concern the legal character of the Institute neither its professional independence. The Institute is an independent client of the Hungarian State Treasury.

The economic organ of the Hungarian Geological Survey is the Office of Finance managing the Institute’s economic and financial tasks and providing operational support. The legal framework of its activities is defined by §2 (2) and (4) of the Gov. Decree N° 132/1993. (IX.29.) and other laws regulating the economic management of state-budget organisations.

Basic tasks of the Geological Institute of Hungary

 

1. Research tasks of the Geological Institute of Hungary

As specified in the Governmental Decree N° 132/1993. (IX.29.) the Geological Institute of Hungary executes the state’s geological research tasks or participates in their performance. These tasks are as follows:

a)      performance and co-ordination of scientific research aimed at revealing the geological, structural and evolutional aspects of the Earth’s crust;

b)      systematic and comprehensive geological, geophysical, geochemical, engineering geological, hydrogeological and agrogeological mapping of the country, preparation and publication of the maps and the related explanatory texts;

c)      continuous measurement of the distribution and variation of terrestrial force fields;

d)      performance of geological investigations of high risk improving the country’s raw material potential;

e)      storage and maintenance of geological documentations, sample collections, expert libraries and observatories;

f)       operation of the national geological and geophysical archives;

g)      operation of laboratories, execution of authentic tests;

h)     performance of environmental geological, hydrogeological, engineering  geological and agrogeological investigations;

i)       maintenance of the gravimetric network

j)        providing a national summary for the domestic mineral resources, its systematic, balance-oriented register and preliminary economic assessment;

k)      assessment of the domestic mineral resources and determination of the environmental impact and other risks of exploitation;

l)       geological data service and recommendation to mineral resources exploration and delineation of areas suitable for concession;

m)    provision of geological data packages for the announcement of concession tenders as well as other geological, hydrogeological, geotechnical, environment protection and mining information needed to determine the tendering conditions.

n)     investigation of approaches in the utilisation of geological natural resources including the examination of the geological conditions of geothermal energy sources;

o)      investigation of the country’s geological state of the environment, determination of geochemical base level values and anomalies and accordingly, performance of research and tests associated with health care;

p)      studying the effects of natural phenomena on geological formations, national surveying of the risks of both natural and human-influenced surface movements;

q)      investigation of subsurface aquifers and related host rocks, geological definition of the research of the country’s regional water  resources including the operation of the related monitoring network;

r)       preparation of expertises for the disposition of peripheral linear facilities, for urban management and development as well as for the approval of regional amelioration plans.

s)       keeping contact with domestic and foreign professional organisations;

t)       data service for the performance of basic public-good tasks;

u)     maintenance and operation of the Geotechnical Archive;

v)      operation of the Geological Information System

w)    surveying natural disasters of geological origin

x)      performance of mineral resources protection tasks not concerned by §50 (11) of the penal code.
